Set Up Google Analytics for Call Tracking

Call tracking software can be easily integrated with your Google Analytics account. Calls can be reported to a Goal that you can create in Google Analytics. In this blog, we will learn how to create a call goal for tracking calls in Google Analytics, how to create a goal for first-time callers, and view your calls report.

Creating a Call Goal in Google Analytics

Assuming that your call tracking software is already linked with your Google Analytics account, follow these steps to create a goal to report phone calls by each tracking number.

  1. Open your Google Analytics account.
  2. Select the Admin tab which is at the bottom of the left sidebar.
  3. Select the Account and Property where you want to create the goal.
  4. Under the View tab, click on Goals.
  5. At the top of the page, select + NEW GOAL.
  6. In the Goal setup window, click on Custom and then select Continue.
  7. On the Goal description window, enter a Name for the goal “Calls” and select type as Event. Then click on Continue.
  8. In the Goal details window, set Category Equals to Phone Calls. You can either set “Use the Event value as the Goal Value” option to “Yes” or “No” depending on your requirement.
  9. Click on Save to activate the goal.

Creating a Goal for First-Time Callers

If you want to separate multiple callers, you can set up a regular expression goal for those who are calling for the first time. Follow these steps to set up the First-Time Caller Goal.

  8. In the Goal details window, set Category Equals to Phone Calls and set Label to Regular Expression to .*Call-01. Set “Use the Event value as the Goal Value” to “Yes”.
  9. Click on Save to activate the goal.

How to View Calls in Google Analytics

You can see your calls data in Google Analytics once the goals start receiving calls. It takes up to 24 hours for the goals to start reporting. Follow these steps to view calls in Google Analytics.

  1. Open your Google Analytics account.
  2. Select Behavior from the left menu, click on Events and select Top Events.
  3. You will see the report.
  4. To see more information about calls, select Calls under the Event Category column. The reporting format changes according to whether the call was received via a keyword tracking number or a source tracking number with the following attributes:
Incoming call via [name of keyword pool] Incoming call via [tracking number] – [source name]
  5. To check details on the caller, click the call in the Event Action column. From [caller number] [call quantity]

FAQs

Can I set a regular call and a first-time caller goal simultaneously?

Yes, you can set up a regular call goal and a first-time caller goal at the same time. Using them in the same Analytics account will not interfere with reporting. Event action reports will be separate so that you can check and analyze the behavior of your first-time callers.
