Whether you’re an advertiser or affiliate network, you want to keep your lead flow clean, with only high-quality consumers entering the pipeline. If so, email verification can be a useful instrument to sieve out irrelevant, risky, and downright fraudulent leads.

Take a quiz to estimate your fraud prevention proficiency.

The concept of email verification is simple: as the lead enters your lead management system, the integrated verification software – in our case, iClear – checks the lead’s email address (as well as other essential details, like phone number) and may flag or block them if the email address turns out to be invalid, duplicate, or risky. All of this happens automatically and takes milliseconds.

And while the gist is pretty clear – all good emails go through; all bad emails are returned to the sender – there are lots of ways to integrate email verification into your lead acquisition (if you’re buying leads) or sales (if you’re an affiliate network) campaigns.

So let’s dissect email verification and see how you can get the most value out of it.

Email Verification in Lead Acquisition and Sales

First things first: I do believe email verification should only be treated as part of a comprehensive lead verification process, which may involve validating and verifying the lead’s address, phone numbers, name, source, and other details that help you identify the real value of the lead.

Email verification alone (especially if restricted to email validation only, which is a surface-level check) doesn’t provide enough information about the lead, which is why we at Phonexa are screening dozens of various lead parameters for our clients.

However, it all depends on how your lead acquisition or sales campaigns are configured. For example, if you’re an affiliate network selling exclusive leads, you may want to reject all leads with flagged emails, even if other details look legit. But if you’re selling or buying less expensive leads, you may want to check all the flagged leads manually.

How Email Verification Can Benefit Your Business

Email verification is crucial for your lead-reliant business to remain cost-effective, especially in high-ticket niches such as insurance, home services, or finance. It’s one thing to buy thousands of low-intent leads that may cost less than a dollar per lead, and another thing to pay a few dozen dollars per supposedly purchase-ready lead – in this case, you’d like to verify them in the first place.

Likewise, email verification is essential if you’re sending an email to the purchased leads as the first point of contact. If the email is sent to void, then the lead in question might be lost for your business unless the invalid email is the result of a technical error that you can fix.

Here’s how email verification can benefit your business:

  • Ensures the leads you’re buying or selling are real
  • Protects you and your clients’ businesses against low-quality, fake, and fraudulent emails
  • Keeps your email sender reputation high (high bounces decrease sender’s reputation score)
  • Keeps your email list clean for better segmentation, scoring, and retargeting
  • Contributes to compliance with CAN-SPAM, GDPR, and other relevant regulations

Verifying the emails you deal with is just as essential as making sure the consumer’s phone number you’re going to call is real. If there’s no one on the other end, you’re wasting resources that could otherwise be spent on potentially profitable campaigns and endeavors.

Email Verification with iClear

Now, let’s review how email verification works for Phonexa clients: businesses, advertisers, affiliate networks, lead generators, lead marketplaces, and anyone who’s buying or selling large volumes of leads internally or to partners.

So we’re using iClear as an email verification solution, which seamlessly integrates with our main lead management platform, LMS Sync (where essential lead data is pulled). In fact, iClear comes as one of our internal add-ons, and you only have to pay for the volume of services you’ve used.

Here’s what a lead flagged by email looks like in LMS Sync (the “Paused” status means you can manually decide what to do with the lead – accept, reject, or else):

Screenshot of iClear features in LMS Sync

In general, there are no limits to the complexity of filtering you can set up with LMS Sync. We track dozens of data points, from which you can build a unique lead processing architecture that no one else has. It’s almost a game of chess, with thousands of options on the table.

We offer three types of email validation services (at the lowest rates on the market!):

  • Basic Email Domain Validation – $0.0005 per ping
  • Email Validation & Hygiene – $0.003 per email
  • Email Scoring – $0.003 per email

Let’s explore when you might need each of these services.

Basic Email Domain Validation

The Basic Email Domain Validation service is the simplest check of the lead’s email address and its domain validity, which you can use to filter out incorrect and unwanted leads.

Use case: You’re running paid social media campaigns and collecting leads from your quote offers. Through Basic Email Domain Validation, you can filter out emails with typos, fake emails, and disposable domains, only reaching out to consumers who are genuinely interested in your offer.

Email Validation & Hygiene

Email Validation & Hygiene provides more in-depth screening of the email address to put it into one of three categories:

Good Verified – Deliverable, active, and not associated with a spam email address
Risky Catch All – Email with a domain that accepts all emails, making it impossible to determine validityRole – Email associated with distribution groups like no-reply@, sales@, test@, etc.Unknown – Email cannot be verified at the moment
Toxic Undeliverable – Email doesn’t exist, is suspended, invalid, or disabledMalformed – Invalid email formatSpam Trap – Triggers blacklists; damages sender reputationComplainer – Associated with complaints or legal threatsBot – Automated spam accountsSeed Account – Known emails for compliance monitoring or trapsUnauthorized – API access issue (e.g., IP not whitelisted)Disposable – Temporary/throwaway emailSuppressed – Listed on internal or external suppression lists

Here’s a clear recap of lead groups with iClear:

  • Valid – emails that are deliverable, active, and not associated with spam
  • Risky – emails that are deliverable but include role-based, accept-all, or suspicious addresses
  • Toxic – emails that are undeliverable, disposable, blacklisted, or known for abusive behavior

Risky emails are borderline, usually requiring manual supervision rather than default rejection. However, depending on the scale, type, and cost of the campaign, as well as the volume of risky leads, you may or may not want to verify risky emails manually.

Email Scoring

To add another layer of trust with the emails you accept, you can request an overarching quantitative email scoring based on email’s reputation, recent behavior, deliverability status, spam trap & honeypot identification, and other identification and detection procedures.

Synchronous vs. Asynchronous Email Verification

One of the most important aspects of email validation is the email database against which the emails of your leads are verified.

With iClear, you can choose three more real-time lead validation options on top of Basic Email Domain Validation, Email Hygiene, and Email Scoring (Fraud and Anomaly > iClear > Lead Processing Rules, and then select the product):

As a Phonexa’s LMS Sync user, you can choose two modes for all five email verification options:

  • Synchronous – real-time email verification BEFORE the lead is bought
  • Asynchronous – email verification that doesn’t interrupt the lead purchase

So, if you don’t want to accept leads before making sure their email address is valid (satisfies your criteria), you should always choose the synchronous mode. For reliable lead suppliers or cheaper leads, you may go with the asynchronous mode for analytical purposes.

Takeaway: Basic Email Domain Validation + Email Validation & Hygiene + Email Scoring verify the emails you process with LMS Sync with unparalleled accuracy AND unlock valuable email behavior insights into these consumers. For consumers who don’t pass the quality standards, you don’t necessarily have to reject them. Alternatively, you can set up a fallback option, like selling them to advertisers that have lower demands for email address quality.

Build Effective Lead Acquisition Email Campaigns with E-Delivery

Email verification is only the start of the journey – once you’ve verified and acquired your leads, you can nurture them with E-Delivery, our proprietary email & SMS marketing software. Whether web or calls leads, as long as you’ve got their email address, you can remarket them with E-Delivery.

Here’s how the E-Delivery dashboard looks:

E-Delivery measures the deliverability of your email channels (Sent, Delivered, Soft-Bounced, Hard-Bounced), engagement (Total Opens, Unique Opens, Total Clicks, Unique Clicks), and spam and unsubscribe rates. Likewise, you can conduct A/B tests and automatically send the winning email copy to the majority of your customers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check whether the email of the lead I’m buying is valid?

To check the validity of the email addresses of the leads you’re buying, you have to compare them against trustworthy databases. With iClear, there are six email validation and verification services – Basic Email Domain Validation, Email Hygiene, Email Scoring, XVerify Email Lookup, ImpressionWise Email Lookup, and Risk Signal Email – all ensuring unparalleled verification precision.

What is the best email validation checker?

iClear is one of the best email validation checkers on the market, especially when it comes to integration with other essential lead management products. Part of LMS Sync, a comprehensive ecosystem for lead processing, iClear seamlessly integrates into complex marketing workflows and doesn’t require additional infrastructure to deliver real-time email validation.

Are there free fake email checkers?

There are some free email checkers on the market, but they all come with limitations regarding accuracy, scalability, and features. Free email checkers may be enough for validating a small email list or doing a one-time email list cleanup, but they are incapable of real-time email validation or processing high-volume email campaigns.
